Distracted Presence · also called half-listening
why do I keep looking at my phone while someone’s talking
Distracted presence is looking away, checking your phone, or scanning the room while someone is actually talking to you — not from rudeness, but because your nervous system treats sustained attention on one person as a low-grade threat. You’re technically there. You’re not actually there.
Standing in the room was never the same thing as being in the conversation, and they can always tell the difference.
What to do about it
Pick one conversation today and hold eye contact for the other person’s entire turn — no glancing at the door, the clock, or the screen.

How people say it
Nobody looks this up by its clinical name. These are the ways it actually gets said.
- I zone out when people are talking to me
- I can’t hold eye contact in conversations
- why do I keep looking at my phone while someone’s talking
- people say I seem distracted even when I’m listening
- I nod along but I’m not really there
- I look away first every single time
- my mind wanders the second someone starts talking
- I feel like I’m never fully present with people anymore
