Zero-exception restart · also called the no-makeup-day rule

why does skipping once always turn into quitting

A zero-exception restart is a habit-recovery rule that treats every missed day the same way regardless of the excuse attached to it: the streak goes back to zero, with no doubling up and no picking back up where it left off. It works because the instant a system allows reasonable exceptions, every future lapse gets reclassified as reasonable, and the rule stops being a rule.

The exception is never the last one. It is the sample size for every exception that comes after it.

What to do about it

Write the restart rule down before you need it, and when you break it, go back to day one instead of negotiating a makeup day.

How people say it

Nobody looks this up by its clinical name. These are the ways it actually gets said.

  • I always tell myself I will double up tomorrow
  • one missed day turns into a week every time
  • why does skipping once always turn into quitting
  • I keep giving myself a pass and it never stops at one
  • how do I actually keep a streak going
  • I negotiate with myself and always win the wrong argument
  • starting over feels worse than just not trying again
