Vicarious Ambition · also called spectator motivation
why do I feel inspired scrolling instead of actually starting
Vicarious Ambition is getting your daily hit of drive and momentum from watching someone else’s visible progress instead of producing your own — the feed, the update, the "look what I built" post standing in for the work you have not started. It feels like motivation, but it spends the same energy motivation would have used.
Watching someone else win has never once put money in your account.
What to do about it
Set a rule: no scrolling anyone else’s progress until you have logged twenty minutes of your own, in that order, every time.

How people say it
Nobody looks this up by its clinical name. These are the ways it actually gets said.
- why do I feel inspired scrolling instead of actually starting
- I watch other people succeed instead of doing my own thing
- scrolling other people’s wins burns me out before I begin
- I feel like I am making progress just by watching someone else’s
- why does someone else’s win make me feel like I did something
- I compare my starting point to everyone else’s highlight reel
- I get my motivation from other people’s posts instead of my own results
- watching successful people online instead of building my own thing
