Vanity Effort · also called unmeasured hustle
why does my effort not match my results
Vanity effort is judging your progress by how hard the day felt — hours in the chair, calls made, exhaustion at the end — instead of checking whether any of it produced a measurable result. It survives because a feeling cannot contradict you while a number can, so effort gets rewarded and the actual output never gets counted.
You did not get worse. You just never once looked at the number that would have told you the truth.
What to do about it
Pick one thing you did today purely on feel, and write down its actual result as a number before you repeat it tomorrow.

How people say it
Nobody looks this up by its clinical name. These are the ways it actually gets said.
- I work so hard and nothing changes
- why does my effort not match my results
- I feel busy all day but nothing actually moves
- how do I know if what I am doing is even working
- I track hours but never outcomes
- I am exhausted and still behind on everything
- why do I feel productive when nothing gets finished
- I never check my actual numbers, just how the day felt
- grinding hard with nothing to show for it
