Quietly giving other people a distorted version of events before you get a chance to speak, so that by the time you explain what actually happened, it plays as a defensive reaction to a reputation that was already damaged — leaving you sounding biased just for describing your own experience.
By the time you hear about the story, everyone else has already finished reading it.
What to do about it
Stop trying to correct the story with everyone who heard it. Pick the few people whose opinion actually affects your life and tell them the facts once, plainly, and let it rest.
