Reactive Abuse · also called provoked into looking like the problem
why do they push until I react and then act shocked
A cycle where subtle provocation continues until you finally react visibly — raising your voice, crying, or snapping — at which point that single reaction gets isolated from everything that led to it and used as proof that you are the unstable or aggressive one in the relationship.
They spent an hour loading the gun. Only the trigger got filmed.
What to do about it
When you notice the provocation building, name it out loud in the moment — "this is escalating on purpose" — before your reaction becomes the only part anyone remembers.

How people say it
Nobody looks this up by its clinical name. These are the ways it actually gets said.
- I only look bad in the moment I finally snap
- why do they push until I react and then act shocked
- I get blamed for the one time I raised my voice, not the hundred times they provoked me
- everyone only remembers when I lost it, not what led there
- why does my reaction get treated as the whole story
- I feel crazy because my one bad moment gets used against me forever
- they poke and poke until I break, then call me the difficult one
- how do I stop getting baited into reacting
