Parentification · also called the child who had to be the adult
why do I feel guilty resting as an adult
A childhood role in which a child manages a parent’s emotions, finances, or household responsibilities that belong to an adult, because no functioning adult was doing that job. The child grows up fluent in caretaking and never gets taught how to rest, ask for help, or be looked after in return.
You weren’t mature for your age. You were unpaid, unqualified, and unprotected.
What to do about it
Name one responsibility you carried as a child that was never actually yours, and hand it back mentally — even if the person is gone, unchanged, or would deny it happened.
