Open Loop Drain · also called the Zeigarnik effect
why am I so tired when I have not even done anything hard
Open loop drain is the background mental cost of every small, unfinished task — an unsent form, an unmade call, an unsigned document — sitting open in your head. Each is tiny alone, but the brain keeps a low simmer of attention on anything incomplete, so a dozen open loops can tax focus more than one finished project ever would.
You are not tired from the work. You are tired from carrying forty unfinished things that only take five minutes each.
What to do about it
List every unfinished task under ten minutes that has been open longer than a week, and close the oldest one today with no partial credit.

How people say it
Nobody looks this up by its clinical name. These are the ways it actually gets said.
- why am I so tired when I have not even done anything hard
- I have a hundred small things half-done and it is exhausting
- unfinished tasks weigh on me even when I am not thinking about them
- my mental energy is gone and I do not know why
- I cannot relax with open loops in my life
- small loose ends are draining me more than big projects ever did
- why does an unfinished to-do list feel so heavy to carry
