Hypervigilance

why am I so jumpy

Hypervigilance is a permanently raised threat-detection setting, learned in an environment where danger was unpredictable. It reads neutral cues as warnings, which is exhausting and makes rest feel unsafe rather than restorative.

What to do about it

Name three things in the room that are actually safe, out loud. Orienting is how the system stands down.

Books that work on this

Each is a 90-day programme. Start with the first — later books assume the work in the earlier ones.

Part of the Power series.

How people say it

Nobody looks this up by its clinical name. These are the ways it actually gets said.

  • I am always waiting for something bad
  • I read every tone of voice
  • cannot relax even when things are fine
  • always scanning for danger
  • why am I so jumpy
  • I brace for bad news constantly
  • exhausted from being alert all the time
