Guilt Ledger · also called sacrifice scorekeeping
why does asking for space turn into a list of their sacrifices
A running, unspoken tally of everything a person has done for you, kept specifically so it can be cashed in as leverage whenever you ask for something, set a limit, or disagree — turning past generosity into a debt you’re expected to keep repaying on demand.
Real generosity doesn’t keep a receipt to hand you back later.
What to do about it
Separate gratitude from obedience out loud: say "I’m grateful for that, and my answer is still no," and let both halves of the sentence stand without softening either one.

How people say it
Nobody looks this up by its clinical name. These are the ways it actually gets said.
- they bring up everything they’ve done for me every time I say no
- why does asking for space turn into a list of their sacrifices
- I feel like I owe my family forever for raising me
- "after all I’ve done for you" is their favourite line
- why do gifts from my parents always come with conditions later
- I can’t set a boundary without hearing about everything they gave up
- they use old favours to control what I do now
- why do I feel like I’m permanently in debt to my own family
