Blood Obligation · also called family entitlement

why am I expected to forgive just because we’re related

The belief that sharing DNA or a family title automatically entitles someone to your time, forgiveness, and access, regardless of how they actually treat you — as if the biological relation, rather than the relationship itself, is what should earn the closeness.

Sharing blood was never a substitute for earning trust.

What to do about it

Write the sentence that would have to finish "because they’re family" to actually justify your access, and notice how often the rest of that sentence is just the word itself.

How people say it

Nobody looks this up by its clinical name. These are the ways it actually gets said.

  • "you only get one mother" is what they keep telling me
  • why am I expected to forgive just because we’re related
  • family is supposed to mean unconditional but why does it only go one way
  • do I owe my parents access just because they’re my parents
  • why do people act like blood erases how someone treated you
  • I’m told I’ll regret cutting off family no matter what they did
  • being related isn’t the same as being close, but nobody agrees with me
  • how much am I actually obligated to tolerate from family
